Yannai

Yannai
   1) (fl. 3rd cent)
Palestinian amora. He was a pupil of Judah ha-Nasi and Hiyya. He estab-lished an academy at Akhbara in Upper Galilee, the teachings of which are cited in the Palestinian and Babylonian Talmuds as 'de-ve Rabbi Yannai' (school of Rabbi Yannai).
   2) (fl. ?6th cent)
Hebrew liturgical poet. He probably lived in Palestine. He introduced rhyme into religious poetry, wrote piyyutim related to the weekly portion of the Torah, and determined the final form of the Kerovah. His piyyutim (with the exception of Az rov nissim in the Ashkenazi rite for the Passover Haggadah) were forgotten until the 19th century, when scholars discovered others of his poems. Further examples were found in the Cairo Genizah.
